SDGT recently completed their first site visit to Early Learning Scholars & Family Services Inc. (ELS), a nonprofit organization located in Clarkston, GA, which is the primary project site for SDGT’s 2025 Solar Decathlon competition. ELS is a preschool that serves immigrant children from 6 months to 12 years old, providing them with English language education, offering a safe and encouraging environment while they transition to a new life, and alleviating financial burdens for their families. ELS currently accommodates over 100 children and 20 staff members daily. During the visit, the SDGT team met with Tara, the head of the preschool, to discuss the multiple challenges faced by the facility. Key issues identified include limited space, deteriorating building structures, and the lack of community-centered features. This site visit provided the team with critical insights into the scope of work required, and has further fueled the incentive to address these challenges. Throughout the fall 2024 semester, SDGT will focus on developing solutions to revitalize the ELS facility from multiple perspectives, including architecture, engineering, energy efficiency and more.
